Mission Statement

The PCE is an independent environmental ombudsperson, whose duties include:

  • Investigating the effectiveness of environmental planning and management carried out by public authorities;
  • Investigating any matter in respect of which the environment has been adversely affected;
  • Reviewing the allocation, use and preservation of natural and physical resources by the Government and public agencies; and
  • Holding inquiries into matters with significant environmental impact.

Composition and Membership

One Commissioner with permanent staff, rather than a multidisciplinary Council.

The World Futures Council notes that there are plans to change the PCE into an Office for Sustainable Development.

Role and Functions

  • advising on government policy or making policy recommendations, including NSDS; and
  • stakeholder engagement.
